New public parkland planned for Cammeray following tunnel completion

The major Western Harbour Tunnel construction site between the Warringah Freeway and Cammeray Golf Course is set to be transformed into 2.5 hectares of council-managed public parkland.

The NSW Government compulsorily acquired the land in 2021 for use as a construction base containing workshops, storage warehouses and other operational facilities.

Transport for NSW has now released a draft Cammeray Parklands Place, Design and Landscape Plan outlining how the site will be restored after the tunnel opens.

The proposal includes open lawns, gardens, new trees, shaded seating areas and walking paths.

An active recreation area would feature a five-a-side synthetic soccer field, a multi-use half-court suitable for basketball and pickleball, and a shaded outdoor fitness station.

Accessible paths would run through the parklands, while an eight-space public car park would include one accessible space. Native vegetation would be re-established to support biodiversity, with opportunities also provided for public artworks by First Nations artists.

New walking and cycling links would connect the parklands with the redeveloped Ernest Street bridge and the broader Miller Street-to-Falcon Street cycle route.

Landscaping and other design features would help shield park users from traffic on the Warringah Freeway and permanent tunnel infrastructure adjoining the site.

Work on the parklands is expected to begin after Transport for NSW hands over the site, most likely in 2028 following the opening of the Western Harbour Tunnel.

North Sydney Council will manage and maintain the completed parkland.

The arrangement differs from that covering the adjoining Cammeray Golf Course, where management was transferred from the council to Golf NSW in June after the organisation was appointed Crown land manager by the NSW Government.

The Cammeray proposal follows the government’s announcement in February that six other sites used for the Warringah Freeway Upgrade, covering a combined 14,399 square metres, would be rehabilitated and returned to the council.
