Neutral Bay’s Young Street Plaza is nearly finished, and the Council is now calling on the community to suggest a permanent name for the new space.

The project, which replaces a temporary pilot, is an $2.7 million upgrade that was approved by Council in 2024. The permanent plaza features new trees, seating, a children’s play area, and pedestrian paths. A section of the area has also been reopened to allow one-way traffic turning left onto Military Road. The original closure of this section of Young St occurred in late 2020 to trial a pedestrian plaza and improve conditions for the B-Line bus route.

The Council is expected to approve the community consultation plan at a meeting on Monday 12 April. This will kick off a proposed 28-day community engagement period for locals to submit their suggestions.

Submissions will be assessed against a set of guiding principles outlined by Council. These guidelines encourage Aboriginal names, recognise the multicultural nature of NSW, reflect local heritage (including notable people, events, and history), and promote gender diversity.

After community suggestions are received, a shortlist will be prepared for Councillor review. The preferred name will then be submitted to the Geographical Names Board of NSW for formal approval.
