The Hayden Orpheum Picture Palace in Cremorne plans three unique cinematic events over the coming weeks, ranging from a historic pop music documentary to an independent film festival and a highly anticipated biopic.
On Tuesday, July 28 the cinema will host a one-night-only screening of “WHAM! 10 Days in China,” documenting the landmark 1985 tour that saw George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley become the first Western pop act to perform in communist China. Featuring newly restored footage of their cultural milestone in Beijing and Guangzhou, the Orpheum is one of only five cinemas across New South Wales to show the film. Adding to the nostalgia, the screening will be accompanied by the “George Michael Relived” show, celebrating the late singer’s career from his early Wham days through to his solo superstardom.
On Sunday, August 9, the focus shifts from music to the animal kingdom with the arrival of the Big Dog Film Festival. This two-hour cinematic experience offers a curated selection of short films from independent filmmakers worldwide, each exploring the unique and enduring bond between dogs and their owners. As one of only two cinemas hosting the festival, the Orpheum provides a rare opportunity for local dog lovers to see these visionary works on the big screen.
The exclusive run continues on Saturday, August 15, with an early preview of “Tony,” a biopic exploring the formative years of the late Anthony Bourdain. Set long before the global fame of “No Reservations” or “Kitchen Confidential,” the film follows a 19-year-old Bourdain as he enters the chaotic world of a Provincetown restaurant kitchen—a summer that would ultimately shape his life and career. The Orpheum remains one of only two venues in the state where audiences can catch this early glimpse of the culinary icon’s origins.
