Saturday, August 8, 2026 will mark the feast day of St. Mary MacKillop, with North Sydney serving as the heart of the celebrations.
As the only Australian to have been canonised as a saint in the Roman Catholic Church, MacKillop remains a figure of immense significance.
She shares a particularly strong affiliation with North Sydney. The Congregational Leader of the Sisters of Saint Joseph, Sr. Josephine Dubiel, explained: “Mary MacKillop Place is a sacred site unlike any other because Mary lived, died, and is buried here.”
Several events will be held across the site throughout the day on August 8, including masses, prayer at MacKillop’s tomb, creative activities, food, and hospitality. Admission to the museum will be free.
“The Feast Day of Saint Mary of the Cross MacKillop is a special opportunity to gather in prayer, celebration, and community, giving thanks for Mary’s life, faith, and enduring legacy,” Sr. Dubiel added. “For the Josephite family, this day holds particular significance. Her example continues to inspire people across Australia and the world.”
New to the 2026 program is a Holy Hour for Young People prior to the 6:00 p.m. Mass. Music and adoration will be led by a young adult community, with a particular invitation extended to those aged 18 to 35.
For children, families, and creatives, a Feast Day Wonder and Reflection Zone in the old School House will offer an opportunity for mindful creative activities.
