Right in the heart of North Sydney, a new bakery and cafe has opened its doors beneath the skyscrapers: Blessed Fruit Pies. The artisanal bakery, run by Persian-Australian duo David and Rose, offers an array of sweet and savoury pies, baked treats, and unique beverages, all crafted with a focus on quality and health.

The journey of Blessed Fruit Pies began modestly in 2023 from David and Rose’s home kitchen. Rose’s passion for baking, rooted in Persian recipes, became an instant hit as they opened up a shop front in Castle Cove.

The decision to transition into a full-time bakery was a big career change for David, who had spent 15 years running a laundry and dry cleaning business. He saw the move as an opportunity to support his wife’s talents and passion. “I thought after many years being in dry cleaning, I wanted to help my wife to keep doing what she loves, the cooking and baking,” he said.

Looking for a larger kitchen space, the pair recently made the move to North Sydney after securing a perfect spot in Greenwood Plaza, just under the tower at 101 Miller St.

David said “We’ve always wanted to be in the North Sydney area, it’s a busy area.”

Blessed Fruit Pies stands out for its commitment to natural flavours and high-quality yet simple ingredients. This begins with the crust, which is used for both sweet and savoury pies.

“The crust, we don’t put any sugar in it, it’s just the flour and butter,” David notes. For the fruit fillings, they try to minimise added sugar. “We try to minimise the sugars in our products to be as healthy as possible for everybody. And no preservatives, no additives, and we try to bake fresh daily.”

The Menu Highlights:

  • Sweet Pies: The signature range includes seven varieties, such as Apple and Cinnamon, Blackberry, Date and Walnut, Blueberry, and the highly recommended Cherry Pie. Rose relies on the natural sweetness of the fruit, giving the pies a “super clean taste.”
  • Savoury Pies: Options include Chicken (with either veggie or leek), the Classic Meat Pie, a rotating Vegetable Pie, and the popular Beef and Mushroom. The savoury pies feature a puff-style pastry on top, which they deliberately make lighter than traditional puff pastry.
  • Other Treats: Beyond the pies, the bakery offers a select range of Persian-inspired and classic treats, including Chocolate and Cinnamon Bubka, Persian Rose Water Muffins, a classic Apple Crumble made with oats, and light, tasty Scones (blueberry and date).

Authentic Persian and Turkish Drinks:

To complement their baked goods, Blessed Fruit Pies offers a unique drinks menu:

  • Turkish Coffee: Brewed in the traditional sand Turkish coffee style—where the coffee maker is heated by hot sand—it offers a strong, smooth, and slightly bitter taste.
  • Sekanjabin: A Persian summer cooler that is “refreshing beyond belief,” made from a sweet syrup, soda water, cucumbers, and mint.
  • Persian Herbal Teas: David notes they have about 15 varieties of these traditional teas, served hot or cold. They are prized for being “really healthy” and are based on centuries of Iranian history, with each blend having different benefits.

Whether you work nearby or are passing through, David and Rose’s focus on quality, fresh ingredients, and genuine passion is evident in every bite.
