Renowned author and illustrator May Gibbs’ cartoon strip Bib and Bub turned 100 earlier this month.

Australia’s first female cartoonist, Gibbs’ Bib and Bub strip first appeared on August 3, 1924 and ran until 1967 – making it one of the nation’s longest-running cartoon strips.

Its Centenary was celebrated with the opening of two exhibitions.

Stanton Library has curated a free exhibition featuring original cartoon strips and rare books; an in depth look into Gibbs’ creative world and her significant impact on Australian comic art.

Meanwhile, May Gibbs’ Nutcote – her original, heritage-listed cottage in Neutral Bay – has set up a special exhibition delving into her journey from children’s author to iconic cartoonist and the impact of Bib and Bub on Australian culture.

Access to the exhibition is included with museum entry.
