The final design for the redeveloped Woodley’s Shed at Berrys Bay has been released as tunnelling for the Western Harbour Tunnel approaches completion beneath Waverton.

Member for North Shore Felicity Wilson said the updated concept would see the former maritime shed repurposed as a community pavilion incorporating heritage elements from the original structure.

According to Wilson, the facility will provide a public gathering space as part of the wider Berrys Bay foreshore redevelopment, which is being delivered alongside construction of the Western Harbour Tunnel project.

“This was a clear commitment of the former NSW Liberal Government – funded, planned and backed in – because we understood how important it was to restore this unique foreshore space to our local community,” Wilson said.

Plans for the pavilion include a glass-walled indoor community space overlooking Sydney Harbour with capacity for up to 100 people, publicly accessible bathrooms and a separate kitchen and services office designed to support community use.

Wilson said the redevelopment sought to balance heritage preservation with new public access to the waterfront.

“Woodley’s Shed is part of the working harbour history that locals value deeply. Saving it and repurposing it was always about striking the right balance between heritage, community use and public access,” she said.

The updated design also incorporates changes to the Berrys Bay Place, Design and Landscape Plan following community consultation conducted last year.

Among the revisions are a widened opening in the existing bund wall to improve sightlines across the foreshore, a revised playground layout intended to allow additional tree planting and shade coverage, and play equipment designed to accommodate children of multiple age groups.

The historic slipway at the site will also be refurbished as part of the project to retain a link to Berrys Bay’s maritime and industrial past.

Wilson said tunnelling work for the Western Harbour Tunnel in the area is nearing completion, with roadheader excavation approaching its final stages beneath Waverton. Tunnel boring machines are expected to commence operations from the northern side of the harbour in May to complete the remaining sections of the project.

“The Western Harbour Tunnel will improve connectivity across Sydney and more importantly has given us the opportunity to completely transform the previously dilapidated former industrial site in Berrys Bay to give back to the local community,” Wilson said.
