A community meeting to launch the Save Bradfield Park South campaign has been postponed after St Aloysius’ College withdrew permission for organisers to use its Great Hall.
The meeting had been scheduled for Tuesday evening, but organisers said the college principal advised the Precinct Executive at 4.42pm on Monday that the venue was no longer available.
No reason for the decision was provided in a statement circulated to local precinct groups.
Organisers said the withdrawal came as a surprise because they had been working with college staff for several weeks and had discussed the event’s logistics as recently as Monday afternoon.
“It is especially disappointing because the students of St Aloysius will be among the direct beneficiaries of our efforts to return Bradfield Park South to the community as a safe, accessible and welcoming public park for everyone to enjoy,” the statement said.
The Precinct Executive said it would find an alternative venue and announce a replacement date for the campaign launch.
The campaign is seeking to have Bradfield Park South, beneath the Sydney Harbour Bridge, restored as accessible public open space.
“While this development is deeply regrettable, it does nothing to diminish our determination to see Bradfield Park South returned to the community,” organisers said.
“Our community will not be silenced. This park is simply too important.”
