A section of Blues Point Reserve has been temporarily closed after asbestos-containing material was found along the foreshore.
North Sydney Council said staff carrying out routine duties discovered small fragments of non-friable asbestos-containing material on the south-western shoreline of the reserve.
The material appears to have been exposed by erosion, with the affected area extending for about 50 metres along the foreshore.
Council has fenced off the site and said it would remain closed until remediation work was completed and an independent assessment confirmed it was safe to reopen.
A licensed asbestos removal contractor will be engaged to remove the material and dispose of it at an approved waste facility.
Remediation work is expected to begin within the next week, subject to regulatory requirements.
Council said the quantity of material identified appeared to be relatively minor, although the full extent of the clean-up would not be known until work began.
Visual inspections of nearby areas had not identified any additional asbestos-containing material.
The remainder of Blues Point Reserve remains open and unaffected.
Members of the public have been asked to observe fencing and signage and avoid entering the closed section while the work is carried out.
Council said it would provide further updates as the remediation progressed.
