North Sydney Council has voted to approve a five-year lease at Level 1, James Place, North Sydney, for the disability non-profit, Studio A.
For over a decade, the organisation has supported professional artists with intellectual disabilities. It previously operated out of Council-owned premises at the Crows Nest Community Centre before relocating to temporary accommodation at 601 Pacific Highway, St Leonards, following an expansion of operations.
With the current site set for development in 2027, Studio A was seeking new long-term premises. The organisation has now been approved for a lease at Level 1, James Place, following a Council meeting on 27 July 2026.
The site is currently vacant and part of a six-storey council building located parallel to Stanton Library.
At the meeting, Councillor Shannon Welch said, “This proposal will also activate a council property that has remained vacant, bringing new life to the space while strengthening North Sydney’s reputation as a vibrant cultural precinct.”
Cr Welch revealed that Studio A will be paying below-market rent, however, she believes the return to the community is far greater. “Studio A’s location requirements mean suitable premises are limited, making this an ideal opportunity for both the organisation and the Council,” she added.
Studio A has also agreed to provide the Council with an annual in-kind allocation of artwork licensing to be featured throughout Council facilities, projects, and community initiatives.
