Australia Post confirmed that the Milsons Point Post Office will remain open following a sustained community campaign and intervention from local figures and politicians.

Executive general manager for retail brand and marketing Josh Bannister said Australia Post had reached “mutually acceptable commercial terms” with landlord Transport for NSW to continue operating at the site. “Australia Post thanks TfNSW for working with us to secure a revised, mutually agreed long-term lease and looks forward to continuing to provide services in Milsons Point,” he said.

Local shop owner Venietta Slama-Powell, who led a petition and rallies to save the outlet, told 2GB that the community was “absolutely elated” by the result. “This has been a huge campaign from the local community. We’ve been unrelentingly fighting for this outcome, and hundreds of people have contributed to this success,” she said.

Slama-Powell credited New South Wales senator Andrew Bragg for his role in helping broker a resolution. “After we met with him, he met with the CEO of Australia Post, Paul Graham, and they discussed the business model and costs and found a way to recover the cost elsewhere in the business model,” she said.

Bragg also told 2GB that the decision was “a great community effort” and praised Australia Post’s handling of the issue. “I think Paul Graham is a good guy. He’s made the right call here. He visited the site himself and saw the topography there wasn’t going to be suitable for people who are elderly and have disabilities in some cases.”

Australia Post said it was contacting customers who had moved to alternative arrangements to update them and provide assistance, encouraging anyone with enquiries to call 13 POST (13 7678).
