As the seasons changed, Kurraba Point residents gathered for their annual Spring Sundowner and awarded the winner of the Winter Light Photo Contest. Spearheaded by local resident Kevin Crosland, the initiative is now in its second year and has quickly become a popular event, bringing residents together and showcasing the unique beauty of the harbourside area.

The Spring Sundowner is organised by the Kurraba Precinct, with the photo contest led by Kevin Crosland. A resident of 15 years, Crosland was inspired by his background in advertising and design, coupled with a long-standing interest in photography. “I think light is the key in photography,” he told the Sun. “The concept of the winter light was appealing to me to try and focus photographers’ attention on that.”
This year’s Winter Light Photo Contest saw a huge response with 45 entries, a significant jump from the 15 entries last year. The contest criteria stipulate that photos must be taken locally and capture the essence of winter light.
“You get some great comments,” Crosland shared, recalling a heartwarming entry from a father and his two young children, aged six and nine, who explored the area together, taking photos. “That in itself was nice to read. When you get there, three entries and one’s taken by a 6-year-old, 9-year-old, and the dad. Oh, wow. So it’s creating that, that’s what I’m very, I suppose, proud of.”
This year’s winner was Branko, with his photo of a misty, steamy morning down at the bay.

Kurraba Point is a particularly photogenic area, Crosland said, citing the long shadows of winter, the intense yet soft light of early and late afternoon sun, and the area’s inherent beauty. “It showcases the area by having people run around and take photos of their community spaces,” he added.
For yet another year, the Spring Sundowner has brought the Kurraba Point Community together to celebrate connection and the beauty of the area.
