Heritage bus shelters set to receive long overdue restoration

You know you’re on the North Shore when you see the iconic Jumbunna orange, ruby red and warm beige heritage bus shelters.

North Sydney Council manages 51 heritage-style bus shelters across the local government area, with 22 identified in recent years as requiring critical renewal works.

At a recent council meeting, funding was approved to repair 12 of the shelters considered to be in the most urgent need of attention.

The works are intended to preserve the heritage significance of the shelters, address safety and asset-condition issues and extend their useful life.

The 12 shelters earmarked for restoration are:

  • CAMBRIDGE – Miller Street, opposite 562 Miller Street, Cammeray
  • ANZAC – Miller Street, adjacent to 331 Miller Street, North Sydney
  • SIRIUS – Milson Road, opposite Sirius Street, Cremorne Point
  • IXION – Amherst Street, adjacent to 64 Amherst Street, Cammeray
  • BRENNAN – King Street, opposite 55 King Street, Wollstonecraft
  • EUROKA – Union Street, opposite 2 Union Street, McMahons Point
  • ANDERSON – corner of Kurraba Road and Clark Road, North Sydney
  • BRADFIELD – 47 High Street, North Sydney
  • CRICKETERS – Murdoch Street, corner of Bannerman Street, Cremorne
  • CENTENARY – 175–177 Ben Boyd Road, Neutral Bay
  • WAVERTON – Bay Road, corner of Whatmore Crescent, Waverton
  • WALLARINGA – Kurraba Road, corner of Lower Wycombe Road, Neutral Bay

The shelters were formally heritage-listed in 2015. However, in 2023 a council blunder resulted in contractors demolishing five heritage shelters and replacing them with new structures.

Those demolished included shelters on the Pacific Highway near North Sydney Girls High School and on Miller Street opposite North Sydney Oval.

At the time, replacement “like-for-like” replica shelters were estimated to cost between $50,000 and $60,000 each.

Council has now committed to restoration rather than replacement, with the heritage shelter program also cited as one of the projects supporting its recently approved rate rise.
