Felicity Wilson has been appointed to the shadow cabinet in the portfolios of Women and Aboriginal Affairs. The North Shore MP was first elected to state parliament in 2017 but has not served in cabinet roles to date.

The North Shore MP has served in several Parliamentary Secretary and Committee Chair roles, most notably as the Parliamentary Secretary to the Treasurer and for COVID Recovery. Wilson also served as Acting Speaker of the House from May 2019 to June 2021.

“I ran for Parliament to make a difference — and that means standing up for women across
our state and working with Aboriginal communities to ensure real outcomes, not just talk.” Wilson said in a statement.

“I’m known as someone who has championed opportunity, equity, and inclusion throughout
my career, and I’ll continue to use my voice for others through these portfolios.” She added.

Wilson has a history of advocating for women’s rights, which includes supporting legislation to decriminalise abortion and establish safe access zones around abortion clinics. She was also the President of the Liberal Women’s Council from 2012 to 2015.

“I will always be a champion for women, for our lives, our rights, our freedoms, our ability to determine our own futures, to compete on a level playing field, to access opportunities unconstrained by our gender. Growing up, my grandmother always encouraged me to beat the boys, a mantra that told me from the youngest age that there were no limits to what I could achieve because of my gender—and yet women remain underrepresented in our parliaments”. Wilson said in her inaugural speech to Parliament.

On Indigenous affairs, Wilson was also an outspoken member of the ‘Liberals for Yes’ campaign, telling the Guardian in July 2024, “In no way can we look across our country and say that we have equal rights and liberties for non-Indigenous and Indigenous people.”

Leader of the opposition, Mark Speakman said in a statement about Wilson’s appointment: “As a mum raising her kids on the North Shore, and with a professional background in public policy, she gets what matters to local families — and how to deliver. She has been a Parliamentary Secretary and served on multiple committees with energy and conviction. She’ll bring that same enthusiasm to her new roles.”

She will be shadowing Labor’s Jodie Harrison in the Women’s portfolio and David Harris in Aboriginal affairs.
