A North Sydney Disability Inclusion Committee is to be established, after being approved by the council at a recent meeting.
The North Sydney Disability Inclusion Committee is a body that assists the Council in making North Sydney accessible and inclusive, by drawing on the individual skills and experiences of people with disabilities.
This comes as a recommendation from the North Sydney Disability Inclusion Action Plan (2022-2026), which was endorsed by the council late last year.
To achieve this, the body will provide advice based on lived experience on how to enhance accessibility and promote inclusion within Council infrastructure, facilities, communications, events, services, systems, and processes.
In addition to this, the body will also provide guidance in further implementing the Disability Inclusion Action Plan, as well as other strategies and policies that will impact people with disabilities.
Along with advice on physical access to services and facilities, the body will also provide guidance on promoting attitudinal change within the community and embedding the social model of disability across the organisation.
The body will comprise ten community representatives who have had lived experience of disability, as well as a councillor who is endorsed by the council chairing the committee.
