North Sydney Council has launched three new creative initiatives, calling for expressions of interest from the artists and cultural organisations.

The suite of projects includes a permanent installation at the newly minted Young Street Plaza, a research role for their Notable Women of North Sydney project, and a partnership with a local gallery to showcase studio residents.

Council currently uses approximately 1.4% of all ratepayer income for creative programs. This investment translates to roughly $1.40 from every $100 collected.

The first project is a commission for an artwork at Neutral Bay’s Young Street Plaza. Following a major upgrade featuring new landscaping and seating, the Council is now looking for a “site-responsive” encouraging concepts that integrate with the plaza’s architecture, specifically its concrete walls and central pagoda.

Council is also seeking creatives to spearhead the second phase of the ‘Notable Women of North Sydney’ project. Launched on International Women’s Day, this initiative aims to tell the stories of prominent women from the area. Successful applicants will be expected to create research to grow the program and help create content such as podcasts, audio walks and temporary public activities. The research gathered during this phase will also culminate in a major realised work in 2027.

Finally, the council is seeking a local gallery partner to collaborate on a series of exhibitions. They hope to provide a professional stage for artists as part of the Council’s Creative Studios Program, allowing artists to reach a wider audience. The successful candidate will host at least two exhibitions between mid-2026 and mid-2027 with direct Council funding and extensive promotional support.

Applications for these positions are now open, with more detail and how to apply on the Council’s website.
