North Sydney has seen an increase in crime across the board over the last two years, data by the NSW Bureau of Crime Statistics and Research (BOSCAR) has revealed.
The top category of recorded crime in the LGA was assault, with a concerning 24.1 percent increase in the 12 months leading up to March 2023.
81 reports of domestic violence-related assaults were recorded, as violence against women continues to be the leading cause of serious injury, disability and death in Australia whilst 141 counts were of non-domestic violence related assaults.
According to the quarterly report’s trend analysis, this is a 59.3 percent increase in DV cases.
Coming in second was theft, recording 217 offences. The top categories was that of stealing from a motor vehicle with 139 incidents and 116 incidents of stealing from a retail store.
This equates to 139.9 incidents and 170.2 incidents per 100,000 people respectively.
Reports of malicious damage to property closely followed behind with 211 incidents, whilst 93 break and enter dwelling incidents were reported.
BOCSAR Executive Director Jackie Fitzgerald said domestic violence related assaults are on the rise in NSW.
“The 15 percent increase in reports of domestic violence related assaults in NSW is due to an increase in reported family violence, together with an escalation of intimate partner assaults,” she said.
“Non-domestic assaults have increased against adult women and young people.”
She added: “Looking at where these offences are occurring, we’ve seen an increase on residential premises (up 18 percent or 1,567 additional incidents) and school premises (up 46 percent or 748 additional incidents).”
“However, three of the 13 major criminal offences: robbery, stealing from motor vehicles, and malicious damage to property all decreased over the past five years, while the remaining offences remained stable.”
