New data collated by the Sydney Morning Herald has revealed the suburbs in the North Sydney local government area (LGA) with the most residential outdoor pools, highlighting a sharp contrast between the LGA and its more pool-dense neighbours. While the area’s top suburbs rank in the bottom half of Greater Sydney, a closer analysis of the figures—which grade each suburb based on its Greater Sydney ranking, total number of pools, and the percentage of dwellings with a pool—shows that Kurraba Point boasts the highest density of residential pools.

Cremorne leads the local area in volume with 279 residential pools and ranking 269th in Greater Sydney. Cammeray follows with 174 pools and a ranking of 382. However, the data revealed that pool ownership is most common in Kurraba Point 5.6% of its dwellings with an outdoor pool (612th in Greater Sydney, 46 pools). Cammeray (382nd, 174 pools) was close behind with 5.1%, followed by Cremorne (269th, 279 pools) at 4.9%.

Suburbs with greater residential density or commercial centres showed significantly lower percentages of pools. Milsons Point ranked last in the local area (792nd in Greater Sydney) with only 1 pool, representing only 0.1% of dwellings. Ironically the suburb is the home to the yet to be reopened North Sydney Olympic Pool.

St Leonards was similarly low at 7 pools or 0.2% of dwellings, followed by North Sydney (0.5%) and Crows Nest (0.6%).

Overall, the North Sydney LGA is significantly behind its neighbours and the Greater Sydney leaders. The most-pool-dense suburb in North Sydney, Kurraba Point (5.6%), is still far below the density of neighbouring Mosman, which ranks 5th in Greater Sydney. Mosman boasts 2,092 pools, representing 16% of its dwellings. Castle Hill topped the Greater Sydney list with 3,898 pools, where 27.7% of dwellings have a place for a dip.
