After nine years serving up some of the North Shore’s best Thai food, Tamarind, located on Bay Rd Waverton, has announced it will be closing its doors for good on Sunday, 14 September. This decision was made with the owners planning on going into semi-retirement.
Managers and owners Sarah, Guy, Card, and Gao took to social media to announce the news and bid farewell to the area. “It has been a very great journey as part of the Waverton community over the past 9 years , we have always been receiving a very warm welcome from every single person.”
Sarah went onto say “It’s been a very long journey yet time passed by too quickly. I still remember the beginning, I brought my son Guy with me to the restaurant at the age of 12, we can see how far we’ve come from day one starting from when my son used to be a little primary kid and now turned into a full grown adult.”
In 2016, they took over the site from Stir Crazy and quickly became a local favourite, filling a void in the area’s restaurant market that not only has few options, let alone Asian cuisines. In 2020, they were a finalist for Outstanding Restaurant at the North Shore Local Business Awards.
The community has responded on social media, with many customers expressing their gratitude to the local institution.
Brandon wrote, “From the bottom of my heart, thank you to all of our fantastic customers over the years. We have been blessed to be able to serve you all.” Another commenter, Danica, recalled, “I remember staying in Waverton back in 2018, when I was still visiting Sydney, and having a Pad Thai from you. When I returned in 2023, I ordered it again from you and it instantly brought back memories. Your food is part of my first core memories of living in Sydney.”
The team at Tamarind has encouraged customers to come by and say farewell before their final night of service on Sunday.
