Australia Post confirmed that its Milsons Point outlet will shut on 12 November, following the landlord Transport for NSW’s decision to put the site up for lease, with expressions of interest called in July.

Employees were formally notified of the closure at a meeting with management on 19 August. Staff have since entered discussions with their union, with Australia Post saying affected workers will be offered redeployment at nearby branches or closer to their homes.

In a statement Australia Post said Milsons Point is well serviced, with seven outlets within three kilometres, including North Sydney and McMahons Point about one kilometre away. It also pointed to a 20% fall in customer visits over the past four years, leaving the outlet well below the state average. Employee sources have also cited steep rent increases as a factor in the decision.

Local opposition is being led by Kirribilli business owner Venietta Slama-Powell, who has organised campaign stalls at upcoming Kirribilli Markets . “The post office is an indispensable part of our community,” she told the Sun. “For many, especially our older residents, it serves as a lifeline for essential services such as banking and paying bills.”
