Nick Timmings will be heading to Cortina, Italy for the 2026 Winter Olympics to represent Australia in the sled sport of skeleton. The Cremorne Point local has successfully qualified for the event after successful results competing in the World Cup, North American Cup, and Asian Cup circuits.

Timmings took to social media to announce the news that “four years of hard work, tough decisions, being tactical, strategical, smart, taking care of my body, taking care of my mind and believing in myself have paid off in the biggest and best possible way.”

“Absolutely over the moon to be representing my country, family, friends and everyone who has supported me once again.”

Earlier this year the Sun reported on Timmings’ journey to return to the Winter Olympics. At the time he was appealing to the community for support.

In his statement, Timmings thanked supporters big and small for their support. “Would not be here if it wasn’t for everyone who donated to me, bought a pin, gave me a place to stay, gave me food, and supported me in any way. No matter how small it was, it all added up!”

Qualification for the Olympics in skeleton is based on athletes’ performance in various International Bobsleigh & Skeleton Federation competitions. Athletes must submit their best seven results from these competitions for world ranking. The top 25 go on to qualify for the Olympics.

The 35th Winter Olympics will be held this year in Italy, the third time the nation hosted the event, last hosting in 2006 in Turin. The first time Italy hosted the games was in 1956, in Cortina. This year will see the event return to the city after 70 years, with Milan also hosting events.

For Timmings this will be his second Olympics, having previously participated in Beijing 2022. But for now, his first step to the games will be out of his front door and onto the streets of Cremorne, a new local legend.
