Willoughby Council has released its concept plans for a major cycling corridor designed to bridge a critical “missing link” between Chatswood and St Leonards. The proposal aims to create a seamless, 2.4km bidirectional cycleway and pedestrian link intended to reshape how residents navigate the local area.
The project, which follows feasibility studies and community engagement efforts dating back to 2020, is designed to significantly improve accessibility to key hubs including the Royal North Shore Hospital, local schools, major employment precincts, and surrounding residential communities.
The route is set to run along Hampden Road and Herbert Street, stretching from Mowbray Road in Artarmon to the Pacific Highway in St Leonards. Plans incorporate a continuous, two-way separated cycleway; 14 new pedestrian and cycle crossings with upgraded lighting and a new roundabout
Additionally, along the route there would be 140 new street trees, 3,600 square metres of native planting, three rain gardens, and two new pocket parks.
Along the proposed route there are currently 1,783 on-street parking spaces 92 of which would be removed. According to the Council’s data, even during peak periods, the current area maintains substantial spare capacity, with roughly one-third of surveyed spaces remaining empty at the busiest times.
If approved, this project would link up with an existing cycleway that runs between Mowbray Road and Chatswood Station.
The project plans are currently open for community consultation. Residents and local stakeholders are encouraged to review the documentation and provide feedback before the submission window closes on October 8.
