A 50-year-old man appeared in court today following a North Shore Police Area Command investigation into a violent sexual assault in North Sydney earlier this week.
Police were alerted to the incident on the morning of Tuesday 2 June after reports emerged of a 17-year-old girl who was allegedly sexually assaulted while travelling in a rideshare vehicle in the local area. Officers were called to Carlow Street at approximately 7.30am, where a crime scene was established.
Following an intensive investigation, detectives apprehended the suspect in Mascot at 6.30pm on Wednesday evening.
The man was transported to Surry Hills Police Station, where he was subsequently charged with aggravated sexual assault deprive liberty and entering, taking, or detaining a person with intent to obtain advantage and causing actual bodily harm.
He was refused bail and remains in custody. He faced the Local Bail Division at Court 7 today, Thursday, 4 June.
