The long-running closure of Young Street in North Sydney is set to formally conclude this week, with North Sydney Council confirming the official opening of a redesigned plaza and partial traffic reinstatement on April 24.
Originally introduced as a three-month pedestrianisation trial in November 2020, the closure of Young Street between Grosvenor Lane and Military Road remained in place well beyond its planned March 2021 review, creating an extended period of uncertainty over the street’s long-term configuration.
Council moved to resolve the issue in October 2024, allocating $2.75m to a redesign that would reinstate one lane of traffic while retaining a permanent public plaza. Construction had been scheduled to begin in mid-2025, with completion targeted for December 2025.

The finished works now allow one-way vehicle access along Young Street, limited to left turns onto Military Road, alongside a retained pedestrian plaza occupying the remaining roadway. The original closure had been implemented to remove turning conflicts at the intersection and support the rollout of the B-Line bus service.
In a statement, council said the project “originally closed to support Transport for NSW’s B-Line services” and that the reopening reflects an April 2022 resolution seeking to balance village amenity, transport efficiency and safety outcomes.
Funding for the project was provided by Transport for NSW under the Northern Beaches B-Line Program, including urban landscaping works associated with the corridor.
Mayor Zoë Baker said the outcome had been enabled by state government support. “All of this has been made possible by funding from Transport for NSW as part of the Northern Beaches B-Line Program,” she said.
The permanent plaza includes new tree plantings, seating, a children’s play area and upgraded pedestrian paths, along with modifications to the adjacent shared zone on Grosvenor Lane. Council said community consultation had informed elements of the final design, including requests for additional greenery, improved lighting and non-slip surfaces.
The space will open to the public at 12pm on April 24, with a smoking ceremony and formal remarks scheduled from 1pm.
