North Sydney Council has announced ambitious plans for a new major cycleway designed to significantly upgrade local transport infrastructure, linking Neutral Bay and Mosman. The project is focused on creating safer, greener, and more efficient travel options for residents across the area.
The proposed cycleway and associated road upgrades will affect sections of Yeo St, Wycombe Rd, Harrison St, Rangers Rd, and Spofforth St.
A key driver behind the project is the desire to reduce local road traffic caused by drivers attempting to avoid Military Road congestion.
Furthermore, the plan places a high priority on child safety, aiming to make it significantly safer for local children to walk and cycle to Neutral Bay Public School and Redlands Junior Campus. The Council also seeks to improve the pedestrian experience along the route and strengthen a vital connection within North Sydney’s overall cycling network.
The proposal outlines several significant changes for the affected streets:
- New Separated Cycleway: A dedicated, separated cycleway will be installed along the main route (Yeo St, Wycombe Rd, Harrison St, Rangers Rd, and Spofforth St).
- Public Domain Upgrades: Major improvements to the public domain are planned, including pavement renewal and a net gain of five new trees.
- Pedestrian Safety: Upgraded and new pedestrian crossing points will be implemented at key locations (Watson St, Bydown St, Spofforth St, Rangers Avenue). Continuous footpaths will also be introduced across intersections to enhance pedestrian safety.
- Parking and Traffic Flow: The plan includes the relocation of 59 parking spaces, though the Council stresses there will be no net loss of parking for the community. Traffic flow will be adjusted, including the conversion of Barry and Harrison Streets to one-way for vehicles to better accommodate the new cycling infrastructure.
The Council is expected to proceed with community consultation on the final design in the coming months.
