A collaborative project between North Sydney Council and housing provider Link Wentworth has successfully launched a new boarding house in Cammeray, featuring 12 studio apartments aimed at supporting individuals facing homelessness or housing hardship.

The new four-storey structure, which replaces a former single-story dwelling of five boarding rooms and two shared bathrooms, provides 12 self-contained micro-units. These are complemented by shared amenities, including laundry facilities, a communal living space, an outdoor area, and storage options. The location is strategically chosen, lying within walking distance of the Cammeray town centre and bus routes to key areas such as the CBD, Royal North Shore Hospital, and the Northern Beaches.

The units have been allocated to address specific community needs: seven for people at risk of or experiencing homelessness, and five for those currently on the social housing waitlist. Importantly, three of the total units are fully accessible.

The project was officially opened on Thursday 20 November by Minister for Disability and the NDIS, Senator Jenny McAllister, and Link Wentworth CEO Andrew McAnulty.

One of the first tenants, Julie, shared her story, describing how access to housing support at Cammeray has been life-changing, providing both a home and a sense of community. Julie first faced the risk of homelessness in 2020 after her son died unexpectedly and her partner left to return to the UK, leaving her without an income. She is now one of the initial residents.

Speaking about her new home, Julie said, “I have an accessible disability room, which I need as I live with chronic pain. It’s nice, bright, new and has a huge bathroom. I use my 4-wheel walker to travel to the nearby park and cafes – it’s a good area. I feel grateful to Link Wentworth.”

She also reflected on the benefits of the community aspect, noting, “There’s something quite comforting about living in social housing, there’s people around and there’s activities that you can get involved in, like the Link Wentworth art program and Scholarship Awards, so you’re not socially isolated.”

North Sydney Council Mayor Zoë Baker also praised the partnership. “North Sydney Council is proud to partner with Link Wentworth to redevelop this site into high-quality accommodation for some of the most vulnerable members of our community,” Baker said.
