North Sydney councillor MaryAnn Beregi has been elected unopposed by her fellow councillors as the new deputy mayor, succeeding Godfrey Santer who did not recontest the position.

Beregi, who represents the Cammeraygal Ward, has served on North Sydney Council since 2012. She currently chairs the council’s Access and Inclusion Committee and is a delegate to the Audit, Risk and Improvement Committee. Over her time on council she has also chaired the Open Space and Recreation Reference Group and served on regional bodies including the Northern Sydney Regional Organisation of Councils and the Sydney Harbour Trust Sub Base Platypus Advisory Committee.

This is not Beregi’s first term in the role—she has previously served as deputy mayor.

Beregi is a member of the Real Independents grouping, which with four members is the largest faction on the ten member council. Mayor Zoe Baker is also a member of this group.

Santer had been the deputy mayor both since and prior to the 2023 council election. Deputy mayor votes are taken by councillors on an annual basis.
